The rooms also enjoy a variety of outlooks toward the Indian Ocean horizon to the front, garden and hillside woodlands to the sides, and mountains to the rear.

The client brief asked for a house without external windows but all rooms to be filled with light throughout the day; a private boundary visually detached but directly linked to the outside world. The spaces are designed around three courtyards where the roof/ceiling acts to reflect, refract, filter and disperse the ever-changing light source throughout the day and the seasons.

The building is experienced as a continuous ramped street-scape of shops, supermarket, daily market, cafe, exhibition space, bar, restaurant and cinema. The concrete ramped structure works as a scale mediator between exterior and interior contexts; framing the mountains, the warehouse buildings, the port, the ocean and at the same time protecting the familiar scale of the shops and food stores.
